Who knew?

GUYS.

I was reading Wikipedia's list of phobias.

I got to the 'N' section.

What did I see?

THERE IS A NAME FOR A FEAR OF BEING OUT OF MOBILE PHONE SERVICE.

It's called 'nomophobia'. I have no idea where the 'nomo' part comes from.

Who knew?

Why do some people love their smartphones so much?

Why is it that some people hate pickles?

  1. That's the nature of phobias, eh? Irrational fear! Psychology is such an interesting field.

  2. ok, so one of the cool things about wikipedia - and the internet in general - is that there are so many links to things! in fact, if you click on the link on nomophobia from that very list on wikipedia, it gives the definition and a reference so that you can check the source.

it is, apparently, an abbreviation for no-mobile-phone phobia, or fear of being out of mobile phone contact. what i find particularly interesting is that it refers to *mobile* phones, which i tend to call *cell* phones. so if i were to have coined that phrase, i might have called it nocellphobia, or the fear of not having access to cellular signals for my phone.

what bugs me the most, i guess, is that my efforts to learn vocabulary using greek and latin roots don't help so much when it comes to new words that are formed in a different way.

  3. Maybe "No" comes like the No More Phone so maybe nomo is like "No More".
Say Nomo really fast ten times and you'll get it.
